Infant Photography 101: Prioritising Comfort Above All
5 November 2024 · 3 min read
For every new parent, their little one is the apple of their eye. But time moves so quickly — before you know it, your baby has grown into a toddler, then a child. Capturing these fleeting moments of innocence is something every doting parent should consider.
Photographing newborns is not easy. It takes real patience and experience, because while props and setups are lovely, nothing matters more than your baby's comfort and wellbeing. Here's how a caring photographer works with little ones, from around 5 days to 3 years old.
We guide your pre-shoot preparations
A calm session begins before we even pick up the camera. We'll let you know to dress your baby in loose, easy-to-remove clothing and to arrive well-fed, so they're comfortable, settled and ready — never rushed or cranky.
Gentle, natural light — no harsh flash
Especially with very young newborns, we avoid harsh flash. We schedule sessions for bright mornings and work with soft, natural light — opening the curtains and letting it fall beautifully across your baby.
A warm room, always
Babies look their most peaceful softly wrapped or bare, so we keep the room lovely and warm to keep them cosy and asleep — even if that means the photographer works up a little sweat! Your baby's comfort comes first, every time.
Patience is everything
With infants and toddlers, patience is the whole craft. There are pauses for feeding, burping and cuddles, and time spent simply playing and building trust — that gentle connection is exactly what creates the sweetest, most natural photographs.
Always prepared
Working with little ones is wonderfully messy — props get grabbed, and yes, sometimes worse! We come with spares and keep everything spotless, so the session stays calm and hygienic from start to finish.
