Preparation guide
Preparing for your family session
The best family photos feel like you — warm, natural and full of connection. A little planning helps everyone relax and enjoy it.
- When
- Any time of year
- Allow
- 1–2 hours
- Where
- Studio, outdoor or your home
- We provide
- Gentle guidance for every age
What to wear
- Coordinate, don't match — pick two or three soft, complementary tones and dress the family within that palette.
- Earthy neutrals — cream, sand, taupe, sage and soft clay — photograph timelessly together.
- Add gentle texture and layers for depth; avoid large logos, slogans and busy patterns.
- Dress for comfort and movement, especially the little ones.
Timing around little ones
Choose a time when the children are usually at their happiest — often mid-morning, after a good sleep and a meal. For outdoor sessions, the soft light around sunrise or late afternoon is most flattering.
Happy, relaxed children
Please don't worry about shy or lively children — this is exactly what we do. We keep things playful and let the real moments happen rather than forcing stiff poses. It often helps for you to relax and follow our lead; children take their cue from you.
What to bring
- Snacks, water and a favourite small toy or comforter for the children. Coffee and refreshments are on for parents, with snacks for the little ones.
- A change of clothes for younger ones.
- Any props that mean something to your family.
